Safe, affordable housing and nutritious food are fundamental human rights, and we strive to make them accessible to all in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas.
OUR PAST
Community Human Services (CHS) was founded in 1970 by Phil Pappas alongside many others. During rapid changes following the collapse of the Steel Industry, families faced considerable challenges while making ends meet. The founding members rented a small storefront in South Oakland where programs quickly grew.
These efforts marked the beginning of Community Human Services’ commitment to addressing community needs and has changed over the years to adapt to the needs of our neighbors.
Fun Fact! The original building of CHS is still owned and managed by our organization today.
OUR PRESENT
Today, Community Human Services aims to resolve homelessness and hunger in Allegheny County. We believe access to food, clothing, and shelter are basic human rights. Primarily funded by Allegheny County's Department of Human Services, CHS operates from trauma-informed, housing-first, and harm-reductive principles.
Our 110-member team at CHS is pragmatic in responding to the constant changes in social, economic, and political climates that impact the health, home, hunger, and happiness of the people we serve. Our team works with passionate persistence to address the drastic and growing macro symptoms of poverty, injustice, and inequity hindering our community and our neighbors.
