Photovoice: Exploring the Experience of a Housing Crisis

In 2010, a group of women experiencing a housing crisis set out to photograph the places, scenes, and moments around Allegheny County that captured what homelessness meant to them.

With the support of CHS and Michael Yonas, PhD, these women used an approach called Photovoice to record and reflect their own experiences, strengths, and concerns. By sharing real, individual experiences, the Photovoice Project seeks to promote critical dialogue and enhance knowledge about living in a housing crisis and to inform awareness, resources, services and policies designed to assist people experiencing homelessness.

Now, thanks to the amazing volunteer work of interactive designer Kate Holloway, the photos and stories from Photovoice can be seen and shared online. Check out the project at

Thank you to all of the project participants, Kate, and the Falk Foundation, who generously supported the project from 2010-2012!
