Functional Definition: 

The Cook works under the direction of the Director of WSC Programs (DWSC) to provide professional cook duties for Café Commons located at Wood Street Commons in Downtown Pittsburgh.  The Cook leads the kitchen team in meal preparation, delivery of food service and meals to residents of the building in a respectful manner, prepares all menu items according to quantity menu, and heats all foods to proper and safe temperatures.  The Cook follows appropriate cleaning, sanitizing of work areas and equipment maintenance according to State and County health regulations.

Responsibilities and Duties: 
  1. Plans, prepares, seasons, cooks, and serves well balanced, nutritional, cost effective meals according to safety and sanitation standards in a timely manner daily.
  2. Prepares nutritional snacks for socials and meetings as directed by the DWSC.
  3. Monitors temperature of hot and cold foods through food preparation and service to ensure that established temperature goals are met prior to steam table transfer and maintained throughout meal service.
  4. Determines and orders amount and type of food and supplies as required for daily menus.  
  5. Checks and inspects food products and supplies as delivered and supervises and assists in storage of supplies and food products.
  6. Maintains, organizes, and keeps daily temperature log of refrigerator and freezer.
  7. Maintains dry storage and paper goods areas.
  8. Notifies DWSC of food, supplies or equipment needs and reports equipment breakdowns and unsafe conditions to DWSC.
  9. Maintains accurate meal and income reports in collaboration with Food Service Cashier.
  10. Maintains and cleans equipment and work areas as assigned by the DWSC.
  11. Provides direction and station assignments to non-cook kitchen staff and volunteers.
  12. Oversees all kitchen operations in the absence of the DWSC.
  13. Provides customer information, resolves customer complaints, and makes referrals to the DWSC as appropriate.
  14. Follows all CHS policy and procedures.
  15. Provides schedule coverage for cashier shifts on a regular basis.
  16. Complies with all fiscal procedures, including but not limited to invoicing, cash handling and documentation.  Collects meal income and reports it on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.
  17. Provides coverage for Café Commons as needed.
  18. Supports the appropriate utilization of volunteers in Café Commons.
  19. Contributes to team effort and performs other Café Common related duties as assigned by the DWSC.
  20. Ability to work flexible hours including weekends, weekdays and holidays with varied morning and afternoon scheduling.

Compensation is $11.00 per hour




Minimum Qualifications: 
  1. High school graduate or equivalent education preferred.
  2. Minimum three (3) years food service experience including prior quantity food preparation and cooking experience.
  3. Current Food Handlers Certification approved by the County (e.g., HACCP and ServSafe).
  4. Knowledge of proper kitchen safety and sanitation practices and standards, and equipment maintenance, including compliance with all Allegheny County Health Department regulations.
  5. Ability to lift and carry items up to 50lbs.
  6. Ability to use tools and equipment required for food preparation.
  7. Verbal and writing abilities necessary to communicate and work effectively with various levels of staff and residents.
  8. Sensitivity to individuals in need of program services including those with physical, behavioral, and mental health barriers.
  9. Willingness and ability to work collaboratively with staff and programs.
