Delivering Holiday Meals Home—One Thanksgiving Box at a Time

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is November 16-24, and we started off by hosting a Thanksgiving Box event at the CHS Food Pantry.

We want to give a HUGE SHOUTOUT to all the volunteers from Allscripts who helped us pack over 65 meal boxes for clients throughout CHS programs. For food insecure individuals and families, a holiday centered around a large meal can be incredibly stressful and a reminder of the financial burden such holidays have on those who are already struggling to meet basic needs. So to give a little extra comfort to our clients so they can gather around a table during the holiday, we put together boxes that included all the food needed to make Thanksgiving classics like stuffing, sweet potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie. We also included a $20 gift card so clients could purchase the perfect-sized turkey for their household. Once the boxes were organized, volunteers delivered them to the clients, as issues with reliable private or public transportation is a large barrier for many communities accessing quality food.

Giving this one box of food is a small help to the overall situation our clients face, especially during the holiday season. If you'd like show thanks for what you have and spread a little cheer to Pittsburgh communities, please consider making a donation to the CHS Food Pantry so we can give again in December for the Christmas holiday. Just $25 will help the pantry provide fresh food to over 15 families living in Allegheny County.

On average, the pantry serves 600 families each month. But because of the upcoming holidays, we have served fresh food to 680 families in November already, and with two distributions this week before the holiday, are slated to serve over 900 families this month alone

Have a safe and warm Thanksgiving,
